Today, we live in a continuously changing world where it is easy to become engrossed in convenience foods and overlook our nutritional needs. However, the repercussions of eating poorly are severe, with an increased prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. This is where National Nutrition Week emerged as a reminder to prioritise our health and make informed choices about the food we consume.

National Nutrition Week

National Nutrition Week is observed in India from September 1 to 7 every year. It is a program initiated by the Food and Nutrition Board under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India. The primary goal behind celebrating this week is to create awareness among the public regarding the importance of nutrition and practicing healthy eating habits.

Nutrition Awareness Campaigns and Initiatives

During National Nutrition Week events, the Indian government collaborates with various ministries and departments to organise a series of impactful initiatives. These activities are designed to reach different segments of society and create a lasting impact on their dietary habits and overall well-being.

1) Mid-Day Meal Program: In schools across the country, the government emphasises the importance of nutritious meals through the Mid-Day Meal Program. This program not only ensures that children eat at least one nutritious meal every day, but it also creates knowledge about how nutrition benefits their development.

2) Anganwadi Centers: During National Nutrition Week, these centres arrange workshops and interactive sessions for mothers and caregivers to educate them about age-appropriate diets, breastfeeding and nutritional supplements.

3) Nutrition and Health Camps: Nutrition education programs are set up to offer balanced diet tips and counselling services.

4) Public Lectures and Webinars: Renowned nutritionists, physicians, and other experts give lectures and webinars on a variety of nutrition-related topics, from helping expectant mothers to preventing diet-related illnesses.
